Alexander Youth Network is one of two non-hospital providers in North Carolina accredited by health care organizations to treat children with, or at risk of having, serious emotional and behavioral problems. Its history began in 1888 with a carriage ride, during which women of local Presbyterian Churches became aware of the extent of poverty in Charlotte. On land donated by R.B. Alexander, the women opened a rescue mission for women and children. A shift of focus to become the Alexander Children's Home, coincided with a move to a site provided by Edward D. Latta. In 1961, the ACH moved from uptown to its present location on farm land donated by Edward Turner Garsed, and evolved into the Alexander Children's Center. In 2003, the ACC merged with Youth Network, an organization founded in the Dilworth Methodist Church in 1974, to care for homeless and runaway teenagers. Services for children aged five to eighteen, include residential and day treatment, day school, foster care, and adoption counseling. Psychiatrists and psychologists, teachers and behavioral management technicians, health care specialists and clinical social workers, are involved with the children, their parents, and other caregivers. Most referrals are from public mental health or social services programs. Private and corporate donations supplement funds from insurance, and from Medicaid and other government programs. 87% of every dollar goes directly to provide services for children. PUMC volunteerism began in 2000. To Share Your Gifts
