Bethlehem Center opened in 1940 as a project of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. This relationship continues with an annual contribution of $1 per member from all churches in the district, as well as additional financial support and volunteerism by groups and individual members. The 1955 Call to Prayer and Self-Denial Offering of the United Methodist Women provided the funds for construction of the main building. The Bethlehem Center Board of Directors is composed of equal numbers from three groups: United Methodist ministers; members of the community served by the center; members of the community at-large. A staff of 240 serves more than 1,000 county residents per day through programs dedicated to improving the quality of life of the disadvantaged. People of all ages, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens receive education, social service information, meals, transportation, and health care. Christian education is available for children through summer camp, Vacation Bible School, and interpretive dance. Visually impaired folks enjoy being in a Sunshine Club, one of several special interest groups. The neighborhood benefits from cleanup and beautification projects, voter registration drives, and anti-drug campaigns. PUMC has been involved with Bethlehem Center since its inception. Our United Methodist Women continue to provide significant support through both funding and volunteerism. To Share Your Gifts
