The Mecklenburg County Women's Commission, with members of faith communities and shelters, rented a four room house on Park Road in 1985, to meet the need for a short term shelter to serve entire families. In 1991, Charlotte Emergency Housing moved into its present facility, designed especially to address this mission statement: “To end homelessness among families by providing opportunities through housing, support services, advocacy and collaboration.” The building has fourteen bedrooms and ten bathrooms on the second floor. Several small kitchens, a dining room, a multi-purpose room, a laundry room, and a child care center are on the main level. Each family participates in housekeeping tasks; each residential family is to have one or two employed adults; each family unit must include at least one child. Any resident with a substance abuse history is required to have been free of use for at least six months before moving into CEH. Most residents have completed a secondary education, and some have a college background. Illness or an accident often is the catalyst to render them homeless. The average stay is two to three months, but under certain circumstances a family might remain longer. Family counseling, social work case management, and transitional services are provided. United Way, Mecklenburg County, foundations, organizations, and individuals fund this debt-free facility. PUMC has been involved with CEH since 1997. To Share Your Gifts
