Communities In Schools helps young people stay in school, successfully learn and prepare for life by connecting needed community resources with schools. It is the nation's leading community-based stay-in-school network. The local branch, established in 1985 with one school and eighty students, now provides services to twenty-four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, with a total of 2,000 students. CIS takes a holistic approach to dropout prevention by addressing the physical, emotional, and academic needs of children and families. During the 2003-2004 school year, 99% of these CIS students stayed in school. The fact that 207 of CIS graduates are enrolled in college at this time is partially attributable to its Think College program. Mecklenburg County, United Way, corporate and individual support, and a generous grant from the Charlotte Merchants Foundation provide funding for CIS. In 1999, PUMC began to participate in the annual August School Tools Campaign sponsored by CIS in partnership with WSOC-TV. Also, in 1999, PUMC began to provide financial and volunteer support to Thomasboro, a CIS elementary school located in one of the Methodist-sponsored Shalom neighborhoods. To Share Your Gifts
