The Charlotte Area Clergy Association founded Crisis Assistance Ministry in 1975. In 1985, Mecklenburg County and United Way designated Crisis Assistance the lead agency to coordinate all county emergency financial assistance. Today the county and United Way provide most salary and overhead expenses, while individuals, foundations, organizations, businesses, and more than 220 faith communities provide financial aid for clients. Emergency financial assistance helps individuals and families facing eviction, utility loss, or hunger by making payments directly to landlords, utility companies, and grocery retailers. The clothing program allows individuals to shop once every two months for a limited number of items of clothing for all ages, as well as household items. The furniture program offers furniture and appliances to referred individuals and families. Partners in Hope is a program providing mentors to those in need of life skills training. CAM requires eighty volunteer hours daily to supplement the work of a small staff. Volunteerism is quite visible in the clothing program, from which a family will receive clothing for a year, as a result of four hours of time donated by one volunteer. Charlotte's non-profit agencies are collaborative, depending upon one another in many ways, with CAM the backbone of the system. PUMC has been involved with Crisis Assistance since its inception. Members continue to fill our CAM breezeway bin once or twice a week, with clothing and household items. To Share Your Gifts
