Love INC (Love In the Name of Christ), a transdenominational Christian Ministry linking church volunteers with people in need, has a Charlotte membership of 162 churches, representing twenty-three Christian denominations, as well as many non-denominational congregations. Following its Michigan origin in 1979, the organization operated under World Vision for many years, before becoming an independent national entity. The Charlotte office opened in 1993 to serve crime victims, disabled, elderly, and/or poor who are referred by police officers and more than eighty social service agencies. Love INC determines the legitimacy of each referral before asking member churches to mobilize volunteers to meet the need. United Way contributed 9.4% of the 2004 budget, with remaining funds coming from individuals, churches, foundations, businesses and others to provide help for 7,039 people. PUMC became a network church in 2004. |
