Room In The Inn Room In The Inn began in 1996 with the Urban Ministry Center working with churches and colleges to open their facilities at least one night per week (December 1 through March 31) to provide shelter and food for the homeless. Each site offers a warm safe place to sleep and serves dinner and breakfast to the guests before returning them to the Transportation Center the following morning. Providence UMC commits to host 14 of the city’s homeless each night for two nights per week. The program started with 20 sites and has grown to over 90 congregations and colleges providing almost 15,000 beds during the winter months. The average daily number of beds provided is approximately 125. However some nights have over 200 beds available. With more than 5000 volunteers involved in the Charlotte area, this homeless service enlists more than any other similar service in our community. Providence is no exception with 14 classes or groups and many individuals providing dedicated service to this outreach program by hosting Tuesday and Wednesday nights each week during the winter season. The simple goal is to keep homeless people from freezing on cold winter nights. A greater goal is to provide a loving relationship to the homeless during their stay. Ask anyone involved and they will tell you how appreciative the guests are and the good feelings the volunteers experience. What a great way “to be the body of Christ by glorifying God and serving others”.
