Day of Service

February 23, 2008

The mission of the Celebration of Service is to share God’s love by assisting people and organizations in need in the Charlotte area. We want every member of Providence United Methodist Church to be a disciple at work! Contact Carol Shinn with questions at cshinn@providenceumc.org.

On Saturday, February 23, our congregation will serve throughout the Charlotte area in two shifts. Projects are offered in a variety of skill and interest levels. There is something for everyone – even the kids! Free babysitting is offered that day for our preschoolers. We will gather again at 11:30am to celebrate our service with a free luncheon at the church. Please read the following descriptions prior to your online registration. Registration is made on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Ms. Smith lives alone and needs some help with a simple household chore. She can not move around well any longer as her left leg and right foot have been amputated. She would like to have a church group clean out her cabinets and put new drawer liners down. It’s a simple request, but it’s something she simply can not do on her own.

This is a great project for a family with younger children who would perhaps like to visit with Ms. Smith or do some dusting while the work is being done. This project should take two to three hours at the most.

In the event there is even more interest we can add some chores such as cleaning the bathroom or helping organizing a closet, etc.

Hilda loves the Lord and loves God’s people. She gets quite lonely at times and would like a visit from some fellow believers. Ms. Vaughn is also living on a very tight budget due to some problems she has encountered with receiving her retirement benefits. She relies on the kindness of others to help her receive enough food to get through this difficult time.

Love INC - Martha W.

Captain: John Marr
9:30am - noon
314 Lima Ave.
Charlotte, NC 28208
(704) 334-2565
15 volunteers
No age requirements

Martha W. is a 77-year-old widow who lives alone on a fixed income. She has multiple medical problems which keep her homebound. She cannot afford to maintain her home on her own and desperately needs some to clean her gutters so she does not end up having roofing problems. The screen on her screen door is also torn and she would like to know if someone would be willing to patch it for her. Younger children would enjoy raking leaves while the others cleaned out the gutters.

Other possible jobs if time allows: trim hedges, wash exterior windows

Love INC - Stephan White
Captain: TBD
9:30am - noon
7135 Providence Square Dr.
Apartment Number 10
Charlotte, NC 28270
(704) 365-9869
5 volunteers
No age requirements

Stephan is such a sweet Christian man. He can no longer walk and must rely on a wheelchair to get around. His church family has served him well over the years, but his church recently lost a lot of its members and so far they have not been able to organize enough people to serve him. He is a complete shut-in and only leaves for doctor’s appointments. Despite his disability, Stephan still communicates with his pastor and other believers over email and on the phone as he is a real people person.

Stephan cannot clean his home on his own the way he used to and he would really benefit from having a family vacuum, dust, and taking some things out of the closet to the trash. It’s hard for him to get around his condo complex because he is waiting to receive a wheelchair ramp that is sturdy enough for him to get in and out and he can not wheel up to the dumpster very well.
