Abe Moyer |
|
Known at Providence simply as Abe, he moved to Charlotte in 1993 after retiring from the Virginia Conference with 41 years of service. He and his wife, Winnie, are both graduates of Emory and Henry College. Winnie is also a retiree of the Viriginia Public School system with 21 years of service. Abe’s theological training was received at Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, NJ where he graduated in 1955 with a Masters Degree. He was ordained Deacon in 1954 and Elder in 1955. Abe served appointments in Waynesboro, Woodbridge, Emporia, Stanleytown, Virgina Beach, Vienna, Newport News, Cheasapeake, and Staunton, all in Virginia. As a seminary student he served at appointment in Brooklyn, NY, for two years. During the first 20 years of his ministry, Abe directed camps for Middle School Youth and Conference Assemblies for Senior High Youth. He served on a number of boards and agencies including Evangelism, Environmental Stewardship, Religion and Race, and as a Trustee for Virginia United Methodist Children’s Home. Abe has just completed 10 years of service at Providence as Minister of Visitation which is a part-time position. His responsibility is to visit those who are shut-in, to serve them Communion, and to be an avenue of ministry to those who are no longer able to attend. He presently maintains a list of 80 shut-ins. Abe says he just enjoys being a part of Providence where he sings in the choir and is one of the teachers of the Wesley Men’s Bible Class. He and Winnie have enjoyed traveling since they retired, especially seeing the National Parks in America. During regular weeks Abe can be found on the golf course on Mondays and Thursdays.
