Our Mission:  The mission of Providence UMC Weekday School is to communicate God's love as it is revealed through Jesus Christ and to provide an environment for children that encourages each child to grow spiritually, socially, cognitively, physically and emotionally.  We are a Christian program which acknowledges and respects the different religions and cultures represented in the program.

Our Goal:  Providence UMC Weekday School seeks to provide a developmentally appropriate environment where the children can grow and learn.  Our curriculum provides experiences in language, math, science, music, art, dramatic play, and Biblical concepts.  We encourage the development of motor skills, social skills, and self-help skills, which lead to our children becoming well-rounded and successful individuals.

Our Philosophy:  We believe that children learn best through play.  We provide activities developmentally appropriate for each age level.  These activities are designed to teach to the whole child and give them the tools to be successful in their future school endeavors.

Our Facility:  We have bright and cheery classrooms that are inviting to both younger and older children.  We have two well-equipped developmentally appropriate playgrounds for daily outside play.  Charter Hall is the church gymnasium and multipurpose room that is available for use by the preschool on rainy days or for special events.  A Children's Discovery Center is used for weekly music classes.

Staff:  The staff led by Anna Smith, Director, is made up of forty highly trained individuals with countless years of experience.  Along with a genuine love for young children, teachers must also have prior paid experience in a field of early childhood or child and family development.  They must pass a strict background check.  Preference is given to teachers with a college degree in the field of early childhood education or a related field.  Teachers are also required to stay current with their education by completing continuing education classes annually.  All staff members are certified in both CPR and First Aid.

Philosophy of Discipline:  One of the purposes of the weekday school is to foster the development of self-control and self-discipline.  We believe positive methods of guidance contribute more to the development of self-discipline than do negative ones.  Because we are working to maintain a relaxed, controlled environment, we set limits and expectations based upon the maturity of the children.  Teachers take the responsibility of consistently enforcing these limits.

Techniques of behavior management in use in or school include:

  • Modeling
  • Positive reinforcement
  • Redirecting the child to other areas of the classroom or to a new activity
  • Reflective time

These techniques help children learn to redirect their energies into constructive outlets and to take responsibility for their own actions.

Allergic Response:  Providence UMC Weekday School seeks to provide a safe environment for all children in our program.  A policy is in place to address and respond to the wide-ranging allergies and allergic reactions common among children.  It is important to note that we cannot guarantee an allergy-free school.  However, we are deeply committed to working with our school families to provide a policy that can support children with allergies when at all possible.
